The Isis Club

We are number one and can prove it!

Sport has always been a focus of the Isis Club which had its origins in 1920 as the Isis Quoits and Athletic Club.

The Club was opened on April 10, 1920 by prominent local citizen, solicitor Mr. JJ Butler.

Mr. Butler, in conjunction with local medico Dr. James Robertson and businessman Mr. John Broadhurst, held joint trusteeship of the premises.

A license was granted to the club the day after opening and it quickly gained renown as a “gentleman’s club”.

Bowls was introduced to the Club in 1922 with the first bowling green comprised of three rinks being laid. As more land was purchased the sport of bowls expanded rapidly to a point where it was regarded as the dominant sport of the club. This ultimately resulted in the Club being renamed the Isis Bowls Club in 1941.

In 1955 the club was reconstituted and renamed The Isis Club. As the first applicant in Queensland for a Registered Club License the Isis Club was granted License Number 1.

The club retained its “men only” membership until 1977 when a meeting in November of that year overturned the ruling and women were allowed into the club with full membership status and benefits.

In more recent years the Isis Club and the Isis Bowling Club have been separate entities with the bowlers amalgamating the Isis Ladies and Isis Men’s Bowling Clubs with a constitution accepted at a meeting held in March 2010.

While the origins of the club initially focussed on quoits, athletics and bowls, the Isis Club, in recent times has expanded its area of sponsorship with financial support of local soccer and junior rugby league.

The Isis Club continues to support its bowlers with the addition of an artificial surface in March 2009, shade covers in February 2010 and expansion for its growing membership in 2014.
